Extraction Simple/ Surgical

Tooth extraction removes the tooth that is causing problems, from its bone. The tooth extraction becomes necessary when the tooth is causing pain and other methods have failed to bring the desired results. There are various reasons for tooth extraction.

The primary reason is when a tooth has stopped its normal growth, due to some reason. The wisdom tooth is removed because of this reason. When the tooth is badly damaged and cannot be repaired it is removed. Another reason can be to make a room in the mouth for proper alignment of teeth. One should never postpone the extraction, as it may increase pain, cause misalignment and possibly infection.  And if a wisdom tooth is causing problem, then it is also removed.

The tooth extraction involves two procedures, simple and surgical.

The selection of the one procedure depends on the condition of the tooth that has to be removed.

Simple extraction – In this procedure, the tooth to be extracted is removed by the tool called elevator. The dentist provides local anesthesia before loosening the tooth to be extracted. The use of elevator break downs the tissues that support the tooth and expands the bony socket that supports and holds the tooth. After making loosening the tooth, the dentist pulls out the tooth with the help of forceps. The experience of the dentist makes patient comfortable and relaxed. The tooth is extracted without pain.

Surgical extraction – The surgical procedure is opted when the tooth to be extracted is not out of the gum or is too large to be extracted in one piece. It is also done to extract the tooth that has broken at the gum line. In this procedure, the dentist has to make a small incision at the gum to get access to the tooth. When the tooth is large, then the dentist breaks the tooth in small parts for easy removal.

The surgical procedure is also done in case of impacted tooth. The dentist cuts some gum and bone tissue, rocks the tooth, loosens it and then pull it out with the help of forceps.

The comprehensive discussion are necessary before surgery , as some patients , with some medical problem  , may not be advised to get the surgical procedure for  extraction .
